Glenthorne Secure Unit

Conversion into a 54 bedroom medium secure unit for acute mental health patients

Glenthorne Secure UnitTheory

The existing building, originally a Young Offenders Unit, situated in Erdington area of Birmingham, was to be converted into a 54 bedroom medium secure unit for acute mental health patients. The main challenge was to incorporate a vast array of state of the art security systems into the fabric of a single storey 1940’s building.

With safety and security being a major requirement, it was imperative that the installation was not intrusive for the residents.

Practice

Close liaison between the design and installation teams in the speedy resolution of design issues, together with the detailed programming and sequencing of the many ceiling void services and systems, which included:

  • Anti Staff attack
  • Perimeter Fence/ Eaves Detection
  • CCTV and Access Control Intruder, voice and data
  • Satellite
  • BMS and Air Con
  • Fire Alarm
  • Lightning Protection
  • Ventilation

“Although the Glenthorne project was procured before our Strategic Alliance Partnership was fully in place, NG Bailey demonstrated all the behaviours expected from them in completing what was an extremely complex services installation and re-affirmed our decision in choosing them as one of our three building services partners.”
